Our Farming Standards
Every cut of meat that ends up on your plate starts in the hands of a farmer we trust. We check how their animals live, what they eat, how much space they have, and how they're cared for right through to the end of their life.
We're not going to pretend farming is simple, or that rearing an animal for meat is something to gloss over. We talk as openly about caring for animals as we do about killing them, because you deserve honesty and transparency. What we can promise is that every animal in our supply chain is given a good life and a humane death, and every farmer we work with is paid a fair price for making that happen.
The Five Welfare Freedoms
A natural, balanced diet and constant access to fresh water.
Shelter, space to move, and fresh air, not a shed with no exit.
Daily checks, fast treatment, and freedom from avoidable injury or disease.
Enough room and enrichment to graze, roost, root, roam and swim, in the way the species is built to.
An environment that promotes calm, curious animals rather than stressed ones.
An animal that ticks these five boxes lives a well and happy life. It also, in our experience, tastes better. Higher welfare and better flavour aren't a coincidence, they come from the same careful approach to farming.
supporting small abattoirs
All UK law requires animals to be stunned before slaughter, except for religious slaughter. We go further: we don't supply any non-stun slaughter at Field and Flower, for any reason, and we don't use gas stunning either. We work mainly with small, local abattoirs, because moving animals in small, calm groups with a familiar handler is a kinder way to go than a fast-moving line in a huge processing plant. We audit abattoirs in our supply chain independently, to the standards of the Humane Slaughter Association, of which we're a member.
Our Standards By Species
Traditional, cross-traditional and native breeds, 100% British born, raised and slaughtered. At grass for at least two seasons, on a diet that's at least 70% grass, fodder or sileage. One of our goals in the not-too-distant-future is to build the UK's largest regenerative beef and lamb supply chain, one farm at a time.
Free range at an absolute minimum, hatched, reared and processed in the UK. Birds spend at least half their life outdoors on real pasture, and live for a minimum of 56 days, reared slowly rather than rushed. No beak treatment, no toe trimming, no routine antibiotics or growth hormones.
Slow-reared Bronze birds, outdoors from 8 weeks old, slaughtered between 23 and 28 weeks so they mature properly. Our whole turkeys are dry plucked and game hung on the farm they're reared on.
Born outdoors in straw-insulated huts and reared in fields for life, not just "access to" outdoors. No tail docking as standard, no gas stunning, and plenty of space and mud to root, wallow and behave like pigs.
Traditional breeds from extensive, grass-based farms, at grass for at least one season on a diet that's mostly grass, fodder and forage. No live markets before slaughter, and a maximum of two moves in a lifetime.
Wild fish landed on UK shores, much of it through Brixham market in Devon, caught by hook and line, otter trawl or gill net only. We never sell dredged fish. Farmed salmon comes only from land-based farms, never open-net.
100% wild, never farmed. Venison is culled only where deer numbers need managing for the health of the woodland and estate, and feathered game comes from local West Country estates.
Why it Matters to You
Most of our customers tell us the same thing: welfare and provenance come before price, every time. That's exactly why we built Field & Flower, to connect people who care about how their food is farmed with the independent British farmers who are doing it properly. When you order from us, you're backing that farmer directly, and you're getting meat that's had the life, and the flavour, to show for it.
Shop the range and taste the difference higher welfare makes.
