What I eat in a day with David Flatman

Former England and Bath rugby player and long-time friend of Field & Flower David Flatman has been chatting with us this week. Flats can often be found grilling a grass-fed Côte de Boeuf or beef rib to perfection on the barbecue, but what else does our favorite rugby pundit like to snack on?

Breakfast
"I really ought to take breakfasts more seriously. Some days I will merely inhale the kids’ leftover toast crusts and porridge, and on others I’ll top some brown toast with bacon, avocado, poached eggs and some sriracha hot sauce. What isn’t negotiable is the coffee; there’s always espresso."

Lunch
"Lunches are big, just because I want them to be. Yesterday I plated up some leftover lamb shoulder, some leftover smoked duck, some thrown-together salad with a simple dressing, and some lovely cheddar cheese. Oh, and obviously about a gallon of sweet chutney. And yes, there was espresso."

Snacks
"I try my best to snack healthily like those tanned, lean people you see in magazines, but I don’t always manage it. I probably treat myself once a day, and that can be a slice of cake or some ice cream. Naughty bits aside, I’ll regularly snack on cold sausages in ketchup (don’t judge me), fistfuls of smoked salmon, or leftover lentil and vegetable ‘mess.’ Really it’s whatever’s in the fridge. It all goes!"

Supper
"Again, these are usually quite big. I love sushi and eat a lot of it, but dropping £70 on Deliveroo does chafe after a time… I love a simple roast chicken salad, but not quite as much as a lump of Chateaubriand, nice and rare, with a sprinkling of salt and some punchy mustard. I don’t think eating gets much better than that. Actually, maybe Côte de Boeuf rules – I can’t decide. So I’ll just take both."
