James Flower & Max Lowery on Home Farm

Personal trainer and online health coach, Max Lowery, shares our views on the importance of selecting your ingredients carefully, especially when it comes to meat. He’s a strong advocate of traditional, free range farming and wants to help us support more British farmers.

Max is the creator of The 2 Meal Day, a bespoke method of intermittent fasting that boosts energy and burns fat. Unlike other weight-loss diets that restrict what you can eat, it’s all about integrating short periods of fasting into your day.

Max explains, "Fasting has nothing to do with starvation. It’s about giving your body what it needs when it needs it. Just by pushing your first meal a bit later into the day, you can optimise virtually every system in your body."

We caught up with Max to get his take on choosing the right ingredients, grass fed versus grain fed and to discover his favourite cut.

Q: How did you first hear about Field & Flower?

A: I first heard about Field & Flower through The Real Food Festival in Earls Court.

Q: What was it that made you want to try one of our boxes?

A: Having spent a long time trying to source meat around London from Farmers’ Markets, I wanted to see if a delivery service could match quality but improve convenience…It did!

Q: How have you found the produce you’ve tasted so far?

A: Everything I have tried so far has been top quality, you can really taste the difference and it’s clear Field & Flower take pride in the way they rear their animals.

Q: Why is it important to you to know where your meat comes from?

A: There is a massive disconnect between consumers and producers. This disconnect can cause an unhealthy disassociation with the conditions the animals are raised in. This is bad ethically, sustainably and it effects the quality of the meat. I think everyone should make an effort to source their meat and take time to understand how the meat they are eating has been reared. This is better for the consumer and animals.

Q: How do our boxes tie into your busy, active lifestyle?

A: Perfectly! It couldn’t be any simpler.

Q: We loved finding out more about intermittent fasting, how important is it to choose the right ingredients when you’re cooking?

A: When you are Intermittent Fasting it is very important to nourish your body with nutrient dense foods. Sourcing local and eating fresh foods means that more nutrients are retained, this is better for overall health, but it will also mean that IF will be easier!

Q: What are your thoughts on grass fed versus grain fed beef?

A: Cows should be fed grass, that is what they are designed to eat. It’s better for the environment, the animal and the consumer. If you feed cows something they aren’t meant to eat they are far more likely to get sick, which means antibiotic use and unhappy animals.

Q: How often do you eat meat in an average week?

A: I aim to have at least three meatless days per week. I believe everyone should be eating less meat, but the meat they are eating should be top quality from producers like Field & Flower.

Q: What is your favourite Field & Flower cut?

A: The classic sausages are to die for!

Q: What recipe do you love to make with our produce?

A: I particularly like making beef stroganoff with Field & Flower rump steak!
