Nobody wants bangers & mash for Christmas

John, one of our turkey farmers

Whilst driving to Frenchbeer Farm in Devon to meet with our Turkey Farmer, John, it occurred to me that this was going to be a very different visit to that of our Pork farmer in recent weeks. Not least because it was close to 35 degrees outside and Devon looked dryer than I’ve ever seen it before. But, also because a Turkey Farm operates in such a completely different manner to our other suppliers – where input price volatility throughout the year won’t be truly felt until Christmas, when the final product is delivered.

Frenchbeer Farm is beautiful, and one of my favourite to visit from year to year. Nestled into the stunning countryside in Exmoor, there are fewer farms placed in the country that provide such amazing views. John and his family rear the most delicious Turkeys (although they are funny to look at during this time of year), and we take a great deal of comfort knowing that so many of you will enjoy them as the centrepiece for your Christmas feasts.

What you might not realise, is that John has to decide how many Turkeys he intends to rear in March. This is a staggering financial commitment to make so many months before the main event takes place – and one that John doesn’t take lightly.

When I arrived, John and I took some time to talk business and the market outlook. With so many reports of an uncertain winter for consumers and energy prices likely to take their toll on all households, it didn’t take long before the subject moved to Christmas dinner trends. We both remain hopeful that customers will continue to prioritise great food and drink, this festive period.

I left his farm full of admiration for him and his adoration for the birds he rears – we are, of course, very excited to launch our Christmas category on the Field & Flower website in the coming weeks. We hope you are too.
