We started field&flower straight after we both graduated with Agricultural science degrees from college. Our aim was to make high quality and locally sourced farm meat available to people who were finding it hard to come across.
We based ourselves at James’ farm in North Somerset, in the Gordano Valley, and began to work out an easy and convenient way to deliver beef boxes to people who love beef! Since the beginning of 2010 we have sent out a lot of boxes all over the country, word of mouth recommendation was to be the best and cheapest form of getting off the ground.
We were always very clear that our grass-fed free range traditional breed cattle were incredibly flavoursome, especially with four weeks hanging. A year later and we have our own on farm butchery with cold rooms and packing and boxing facilities. We have broadened our range from high quality beef to pork, lamb, chicken and wild game – all sourced from Somerset farms within 15 miles of our butchery that farm free range or organic stock.
The last 18 months has been incredibly encouraging with many people now concerned about sourcing food with low food miles, locally and of high quality. We have been praised in Rose Princes The Good Food Guide 2011 for having meat of a ‘remarkable quality’, enjoyed selling from London’s famous Borough market, and even served Sir Richard Branson a steak from our pop-up kitchen.
